Walkers, runners and cyclists will now be able to travel from the outer north into the city, with works on the Diamond Creek Trail extension now completed.

Minister for Environment and Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio visited the completed trail, which provides more space for recreational users and better connections for commuters.

The Andrews Labor Government invested $5.1 million towards Stage 2 of the trail which is encouraging more people to use trails to get around.

The 3.2km extension connects the Diamond Creek Trail with the Main Yarra Trail, forming a 55km trail from Melbourne CBD to Hurstbridge.

The extension includes a paved path for runners, cyclists and walkers, and a natural trail for horse riding along with six new bridges between Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge.

Stage one of the projects extended the existing trail 2.1km from Diamond Creek up to Wattle Glen. Stage two of the project extended the trail another 3.2km all the way to Hurstbridge.

Planning and construction of this trail supported 100 jobs and will boost to the local economy by attracting trail users into the northern suburbs.

The upgrades were funded through the Labor Government’s $315 million Suburban Parks Program, which will create 6,500 hectares of public open space including parkland and trails.

The design and delivery of the Diamond Creek Trail extension was led by Nillumbik Shire Council who also contributed $5 million towards Stage 2 and worked with locals to ensure the project met the needs of the community.
