That’s why the Carroll Labor Government is making commonsense decisions to save the Budget $2 billion while delivering projects Victoria needs.

$2 billion in savings on the Suburban Rail Loop

The Suburban Rail Loop is an important project for Victoria.

The Carroll Labor Government is making every dollar count while building it. 

The Government has identified around $1 billion in immediate savings by reducing spending on unnecessary additions to the project’s scope.

This means the total estimated investment in SRL is now $33.3 billion.

We will also commission an independent, technical review to target a further $1 billion in savings. 

No further contracts will be awarded until the review is complete.

This will not slow current works. All current works will continue, and tunnel boring machines will be in the ground on schedule – because Labor is delivering this project.

Reducing unnecessary additions to project scope

The Government will not proceed with construction of underground station interchanges at Box Hill and Glen Waverley – instead providing safe, efficient surface transfers from day one.

Other changes include alternative ways to deliver sufficient parking in Glen Waverley. 

The Government will also not proceed with an unneeded second station entrance at Clayton, or complex pedestrian bridges in Burwood and Cheltenham.

The SRL Community Projects Fund will cease at the completion of the current round and some future precinct works will be scaled back.

Reducing unnecessary duplication in project delivery

Victoria doesn’t need two agencies to build transport infrastructure.

Next year, the Government will move the Suburban Rail Loop Authority and its work into the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority.

VIDA delivered the Metro Tunnel and other major projects across the state.

Bringing expertise together means less duplication and more savings for taxpayers.
