The Andrews Labor Government is improving the visitor experience at the famous Princess Margaret Rose Cave, with safety upgrades and better camping and visitor facilities.

Minister for Environment and Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio announced $650,000 towards the project as part of a$2 million investment into the region through Victoria’s Great Outdoors program.

This vital work will ensure the reopening of Princess Margaret Rose Cave creates economic opportunities and benefits for both tourism operators and surrounding towns.

The redevelopment works will include essential safety works, upgrades to the existing visitor centre, upgrades to cave lighting and electrical systems, pathways from the entry to the carpark, and upgrades to toilets.

Princess Margaret Rose Cave is a renowned tourist destination in the Lower Glenelg National Park located on the Victoria-South Australia border. The park is home to a diverse range of native birdlife, kangaroos and emus and offers nature walks with impressive views of the surrounding landscape and cliffs.

The limestone cave formed between 15 and 30 million years ago, featuring actively growing stalactites, stalagmites and helictites. The cave was carved out by tidal waters from the Glenelg River around 800,000 years ago and is now said to be most decorated cave per square metre anywhere in Australia.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023.

Victoria’s Great Outdoors program is boosting regional tourism and making it easier for Victorians to enjoy nature by investing $106.6 million in better walking trails, campgrounds, four-wheel drive tracks and visitor facilities.
