Victorians will have more confidence when engaging professional engineering services with mandatory registration for engineers starting from 1 July 2021.

Registration aims to protect Victorians by ensuring that engineering services are provided by professional engineers who are suitably qualified, experienced and undertake continuing professional development to maintain their registration.

The first group to be registered as professional engineers in Victoria will be those who are currently registered as building engineers by the Victorian Building Authority. These engineers will be automatically transferred to the new registration scheme.

For all other professional engineers, mandatory registration will be rolled out over the next two and a half years. This staggered approach will allow engineers to be registered progressively across fire safety, civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering.

To deliver this election commitment, the Victorian Government has worked with the engineering profession to finalise the implementation, which is being phased in to assist professional engineers prepare for registration.

The first step in the registration process is for professional engineers to have their qualifications and experience reviewed via an approved assessment scheme.

The initial list of organisations approved to run these assessment schemes is now available. Further assessment schemes are expected to be approved as registration is rolled-out by area of engineering.
