Thousands of affordable and social housing homes are under construction and welcoming new residents across Victoria, as the Andrews Labor Government continues to deliver more homes for those who need them most.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Housing Colin Brooks today visited the Abbotsford Street development in North Melbourne that is being delivered as part of the Labor Government’s record investment in housing.

The Abbotsford development – a partnership between Homes Victoria, MAB Corporation, and HousingFirst – will see 112 no longer fit for purpose dwellings replaced with 133 new, well designed, modern, and sustainable homes – boosting social housing on the site by 18 per cent.

These new one, two and three-bedroom homes are modern and energy efficient, meaning renters will be warm in winter and cool in summer, while saving on their power bills. In addition, there will be 167 market homes at the site, adding much-needed stock to Melbourne’s housing supply.

The redevelopment will provide plenty of communal spaces for residents and the wider community to enjoy. Upon completion, the project will also connect to the surrounding neighbourhood, including the new North Melbourne Primary School, with accessible footpaths and public open green spaces.

The social housing component of the development is due for completion in early 2024, supporting more than 480 jobs during construction.

The project is being delivered alongside the Labor Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build – which has already completed or started construction on more than 7,600 homes, with more than 2,800 households either in or preparing to move into their new homes.

The Government is on track to deliver more than 12,000 much-needed new social and affordable homes and create more than 40,000 jobs in construction.

The Government is also providing a new $1 billion Regional Housing Fund to deliver more than 1,300 new homes across regional Victoria.

The new homes will include a mix of social and affordable housing – and the Government will work with councils, regional partnerships and local communities to determine the right mix of stock and locations for each region.
